To wrap up our time off of work, Jeff and I wanted to go out for a nice dinner Saturday night. We got in the car and headed north toward Appleton but wanted something different than the usual. He got off on the Ballard Road exit, one we’d never traveled to before and we spotted a restaurant called GingeRootz Asian Grille that looked interesting. We had no clue what the prices or food would be like but we thought we’d give it a try. And, we’re soooo glad that we did.
We started our meal in the softly lit, quaint restaurant in a booth made for two with a glass of wine for me and a beer for Jeff. We ordered Tempura Shrimp and Crab Mahi Rolls ($5.95), which were shrimp and crab wrapped in nori and dipped in a light tempura batter and were served with chop sticks. They were extremely light, despite the tempura, and wonderful.
Their menu was huge and had great descriptions of each of the menu items. The menu was broken down into sections: from the Earth, from the field, from the sky, from the sea, etc. We had to ask our waitress to give us extra time a few times because there is so much on the menu. In the end we ended up asking for her advice. I ordered from the traditional section of the menu. Kung Pao 3 styles ($10.95), which was chicken, beef and shrimp sauteed in a spicy kung pao sauce with green and red peppers and water chestnuts. The dish was topped with peanuts. Jeff ordered, per our waitresses suggestion, Pepper Salt Shrimp ($14.95), which as jumbo shrimp quickly fried and wok tossed with five special spices, salt and pepper. Both meals were served with our choice of white, brown or fried rice. We shared both of our entrees with each other and I honestly don’t think we stopped talking about how amazing everything was the entire time we were eating.
And for dessert (c’mon, it’s back to work in a day) we had Carmel Tempura Cheesecake ($4.99), which was basically a tempura battered and lightly deep fried slice of cheesecake that was drizzled with carmel. Aaaa-mazing!
All in all, we though the restaurant was reasonably priced and a great place to dine. We’ll go back.
