Best of Oshkosh

I was of course craving corned beef on St. Patty’s Day and in true form did little to plan ahead for the occasion. So we did our little song and dance and hemmed and hawed over where we could possibly go to dinner.

Eventually I gave into my craving and picked one of my favorite places in town – Pilora’s. Much to my surprise – and I shouldn’t have been surprised – they had what turned out to be a killer corned beef sandwich on the menu for the evening, perfect for the occasion. It was served on traditional bread and with lots of horseradish, which was delicious. The meat was tender and juicy…just what I had in mind.

Jeff had the tuna casserole, which my mom would be proud to hear is actually one of my favorite items on their menu. It’s basically their macaroni and cheese, which is TO DIE FOR, topped with a delicious and creamy tuna mixture. It’s nothing like the stuff I ate when I was a child. Take that, ma.

Last week a few girl friends were looking for a place in Oshkosh to eat lunch, I suggested Pilora’s, which is a great little coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner spot. Their menu covers everything from corn bread pancakes, to their famous beer cheese soup, to really good egg salad, wraps, burgers and more. One of the most appealing parts, I think, is the down-homeyness. Nothing is fried and everything is made to order.  Plus, they serve Alterra coffee, which brings me back to my Milwaukee roots with each sip. Mmm. My friends absolutely loved the choice and have been raving about it ever since. In fact, I think a girls lunch day is likely in our near future.

After our St. Patrick’s Day dinner, 20 minutes before the restaurant was to close and after we’d been given our bill, the owner delivered two beautiful mint brownies and declared: “Dessert!” It was 100 percent appreciated – rich, chocolaty and moist – and a nice touch, especially since it was so unexpected. And I think that’s just it, Pilora’s is so appealing because it’s cozy and warm, not glitzy or glamorous, but at the same time it’s one of the best places to get a bite to eat in town. It’s sort of all encompassing of this little town I love to call home, a good mix of casual friendly people.

Piloras is definitely my favorite place in Oshkosh. I love their chicken salad. Pearson’s is my number 2. :)

Pearson’s is also on my list. I love their BBQ nachos along with everything else on the menu. Mmmm.
