Becket’s

Posted by on August 20, 2008

It opens today, but we were among the lucky ones that got to try it out last night – Becket’s.

It’s Oshkosh’s newest restaurant, right on the river, and I pray it will be a hit. The food was absolutly amazing, the atmosphere is perfect and the wait staff, well, we loved our waiter, Matthew. Plus, he did an excellent job recommending entrees for us.

Our meal started with coconut shrimp, which were served with a marmalade dipping sauce. ($8). The shrimp were huge. I seriously only ate like one and a half of the five that were served to us. The shrimp were really juicy and really more sweet than I expected. I liked them.

They also brought out a cup of clam chowder for us to share. ($4). Matthew said it was going to be their signature soup. And being the clam chowder fans that we are, we didn’t put up a fight when they asked us to sample some. It was very rich and went well with their pretzel-like rolls, which are served with each meal. Not too fishy, but definitely enough flavor.

For dinner, Jeff ordered the mahi-mahi en papiotte, which was prepared in a parchment paper bag with white wine and fresh lemon and lime. ($14). It was very lemony, which I absolutly enjoyed because I’m such a lemon fan. The fish was light and the portion size was just right. It was served with a side of veggies, which included squash and zucchini, green beans and tomatoes, which I’m pretty sure were prepared on the grill. For a potato choice, both Jeff and I opted for the potato croquette. To the best of my knowledge it was sort of like seasoned mashed potatoes in the middle, breaded with Panko and flash fried. It was really good.

For my main entree, I ordered the tenderloin. (Surprise, surprise). ($20). It was grilled perfectly – to my ‘medium’ liking – and topped with a small amount of butter, for flavor. I really enjoyed the veggies that were served, as I am always a ‘get your veggies’ proponent.

For dessert, we shared the key lime pie. ($4). The dessert was served in a small cocktail glass and coined a ‘dessert cocktail.’ It was refreshing, sweet and the presentation was nice complete with a fresh lime on top. (Thank you for not putting a cherry on top).

The beer selection at the bar was up to Jeff’s standards. He ordered Bell’s Oberon and I had a few glasses of Pinot Grigio. The restaurant also offered a few dessert cocktails, which I was a little too tipsy to sample. Although, I’m betting the Brandy Alexander would have been amazing.

Becket’s is the kind of restaurant you can take a date to and impress her, but also the kind of restaurant you can stop in wearing jeans and a T-shirt and not feel under dressed. They also have a lunch menu and open at 11 a.m. daily.

Yep, that’s basically what a croquette is!
My grandmother always made them with Thanksgiving leftovers – she used leftover mashed potatoes, shredded turkey, and sometimes some veggies, made balls out of them, then coated in an egg wash and regular breadcrumbs.

We would eat them with some leftover gravy or sometimes even mashed on a piece of bread with butter.
