Mark your calendars – June 27. You now have plans.
Not only is June 27 my 26th birthday, but it’s also the 9th annual Men Who Cook for Christine Ann. The Christine Ann Center, for those of you who do not know, offers domestic abuse services in Winnebago and Green Lake counties.
Men Who Cook is an annual event where men in the community gather to show their respect and that they can cook.
The award-winning event will take place at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Reeve Memorial Union, where over 50 “chefs” will come together to share not only their love of cooking, but also their common goal of helping victims of domestic abuse break free from the cycle of violence. Using exquisite culinary skills, the men will share samples of their favorite appetizers, entrees, side dishes and desserts to guests amidst soft jazz entertainment, silent and live auctions, and more. “Men Who Cook” is a key fundraising event for Christine Ann; it is also part of the agency’s efforts to more actively engage men in the work to end violence against women. — Men Who Cook website.
The announcement part of this post comes when I tell you that JEFF (my Jeff) will be among the men cooking in the event this year. Of course I’ve helped Jeff in handpicking his our recipe. But the catch is, there are no girls allowed in the kitchen so he’s going to have to fly solo on this one. I’m so proud of him for signing up to literally cook for hundreds of people.
He’s excited, and a little nervous when he thinks about the volume of food he’ll have to prepare. This event is well attended and he knows a lot of people who are going to remember just what he made (that part is still a secret). We’ve attended this event I think every year I’ve lived in Oshkosh but it’s going to be quite a different perspective to hear Jeff’s stories about cooking with all the other men in that oversized industrial kitchen.
For my birthday I ask one thing of you if you live in the Fox Valley (even the state), attend Men Who Cook. It’s a great community event and the money goes toward a great cause. Tickets are $50 in advance, $60 at the door. More info here. Like I said, great cause. Plus, it’s my birthday.
